ABC star Joan Vassos of the hit show The Golden Bachelorette is finding herself in hot water after her late husband’s legal charges have apparently been uncovered.
The star has been open about her late husband, John, who passed in 2021 following his battle with pancreatic cancer.
However, fans have discovered an old press release — which was also obtained by Express US — from FBI and the IRS Criminal Investigation Unit in Washington D.C., which seemingly names a “John Vassos of Bethesda, Maryland” in a mail fraud case. Joan and her family are Maryland natives.
Regarding John, the documents detail that a Forney Enterprise, Inc. was “in a scheme with John Vassos and the President of Sharp Business Systems (SBS) to obtain a contract with the Maryland Administrative Office of the Courts (Maryland AOC) for copier maintenance and repair services throughout the state’s court system.”
“Forney committed money laundering by providing the entire $400,000 to Vassos, who was an SBS consultant,” the release states.
“Vassos pled guilty in June 2017 to one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud, one count of tax fraud, and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud,” the documents state.
Fans are pointing fingers at Joan as they beg for an explanation on her late husband’s dark past.
After a Bachelor Nation fan shared the statement to Reddit, one fan commented: “Anyone upset about this should ask why a woman who knew her dead husband had some shady s–t in his past was happy to go on a reality tv show where that s–t could come out.”

“Blame her, not the [original Reddit] poster here. Cheating taxpayers and minorities is not cool; him being dead doesn’t change that. And unless she’s completely naive to the ways of the internet, if her interest was to protect his memory, this wasn’t the way to do it,” the angry fan finished.
Another commented: “I mean; she did agree to go onto a reality show. I don’t see her as the victim here. Kinda weird.”
“Joan was listed as a defendant so she at least knew something about what was going on. Why would you go on tv and truck this coming out on a bigger scale? Why risk putting your kids through that again for money?” another critic asked.
As the second half of Joan’s inaugural season is underway, fans are desperate for answers from the star.
New episodes of The Golden BAchelorette air Wednesdays on ABC and stream later on Hulu.
